Labor Day Weekend

This year for Labor Day, we went camping with a bunch of friends! We stayed at Osceola Vista Campground in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Words could never describe how beautiful it was!

Some friends borrowed our car to head up Friday afternoon and set up camp. Shawn and I rode up later that evening with another couple and everyone else joined us the next day. Saturday we spent the day hiking, swimming, and playing games around the campsite.

On Sunday the weather was super cold and rainy, but we hoped that the rain would let up by the time we drove further into White Mountain National Forest to hike Mt. Washington. The drive from our campsite to the base was so beautiful. It was nice to see actual mountains again. Living in the city surrounded by concrete buildings makes me appreciate the mountains even more!

An hour and a half later, it was still pouring so we decided to try driving up to the top instead of hiking since we'd come all that way. There were a few cars in front of us in the line to drive up, but we finally pulled up to the booth and got ready to pay the fee. The guy came to our car and said that because of the weather at the top they could no longer let anyone up. We missed the cut off by one car! We were so bummed! We regrouped to try and figure out what we wanted to do and ended up deciding to try hiking up again since the weather at the base wasn't too bad. Me being the space cadet that I am, forgot to bring my camera and so I wasn't able to get any pictures. There was low visibility looking out from the mountain, but we were hiking in the clouds and it was beautiful! We hiked up about a mile and a half and then turned around since we were pretty soaked.

Back at the Visitor's Center, there were a bunch of thru-hikers who were doing the entire Appalachian Trail. They told us about their adventure so far, how long they'd been out, and where they were from. Some of them had started the journey solo, but met fellow hikers along the way and continued on together. Hiking the Appalachian Trail is quite the ordeal and it was fascinating learning so much about it this weekend!

When we got back to our campsite, everything was wet and our fire pit was flooded so our plan to cook dinner over the fire wasn't going to happen. To avoid the rain and get warm, we decided to go find a restaurant to eat dinner at. There was a cute Mexican place up the street a ways and it ended up being really good! It was one of our friend's birthday so our waiter came and made fried ice cream right in front of her while we sang Happy Birthday. Perfect way to end the night and our Labor Day weekend!
